Mount Airy's Holiday Season Mostly Happens At 3 p.m. At The Andy Griffith Playhouse

October 15, 2026

Here is Mount Airy's 2026 holiday season so far. It starts on Saturday, December 5, and from then through Sunday, December 20, every Saturday and Sunday has a Surry Arts Council show. That's six weekend days across three straight weekends. Five of them are 3 p.m. matinees at the Andy Griffith Playhouse, which seats 359.

The outdoor events most families plan around haven't been dated yet: the Christmas parade, the tree lighting, and the Veterans Day parade. So as of mid-October, December in Mount Airy runs on a ticket calendar and an afternoon schedule, and the big downtown dates are still open. The best way to plan the season is to start with the shows and fill in the downtown dates once they're posted.

October is the warm-up, and it uses the same two stages

The holiday run follows the same pattern as the last two weekends of October. The same two Surry Arts Council stages a few blocks apart carry most of the schedule, with downtown filling in the evenings.

  • Mayberry Ukefest, October 23 to 25. It runs all day at the Historic Earle Theatre and the Old-Time Music Heritage Hall, hosted by George Smith and Kent Knorr. Visit Mayberry's event page says the 2026 classes and events will be announced later.
  • Spookley the Square Pumpkin, The Musical, Saturday, October 24 at 3 p.m. It's at the Andy Griffith Playhouse. Preferred seats are $20 and orchestra seats are $15.
  • Historic Downtown Mount Airy Ghost Tours, October 23, 24, 30, and 31, 8 to 9:30 p.m. The Visit Mayberry events calendar lists them at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History.
  • Downtown Trick-or-Treating, Saturday, October 31, 4 to 6 p.m. It happens at participating downtown businesses. Downtown Mount Airy also lists a Downtown Halloween Celebration that day, without a time or location yet.

October 24 shows how the season tends to stack up. Ukefest is going at the Earle, Spookley starts at the Playhouse at 3, and a ghost tour goes out at 8. You could do all three without moving the car very far.

November has one big night, and it's at the Earle

The calendar thins out between Halloween and Thanksgiving. The main ticketed show is Lonesome River Band on Saturday, November 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Historic Earle Theatre, part of the Surry Arts Council's Blue Ridge & Beyond series. Preferred seats are $30 and balcony seats are $25.

The Earle is the bigger of the two rooms. It holds 424 people: 242 reserved seats and 182 in the balcony. That two-tier layout explains the two-tier pricing for this show. Most of the December holiday shows are at the smaller Playhouse instead.

December, weekend by weekend

This table carries the most planning weight in the post. Every date below is listed for 2026 on the Surry Arts Council's Live Theatre and Blue Ridge & Beyond pages.

Date Show Venue and time Tickets
Sat, Dec 5 Travis Frye & Blue Mountain Historic Earle Theatre, 7 p.m. $10 general admission
Sun, Dec 6 The Nutcracker, New York Ballet for Young Audiences Andy Griffith Playhouse, 3 p.m. $25 preferred, $20 orchestra
Sat, Dec 12 Dr. Seuss's How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical Andy Griffith Playhouse, 3 p.m. $25 preferred, $20 orchestra
Sun, Dec 13 Dr. Seuss's How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical Andy Griffith Playhouse, 3 p.m. $25 preferred, $20 orchestra
Sat, Dec 19 Madeline's Christmas Andy Griffith Playhouse, 3 p.m. $20 preferred, $15 orchestra
Sun, Dec 20 Elkin Big Band, "Big Band Christmas Classics" Andy Griffith Playhouse, 3 p.m. $25 preferred, $20 orchestra
Mon, Dec 21 A Very Embers Christmas Andy Griffith Playhouse, 7 p.m. $35 preferred, $30 orchestra

The price range runs from a $10 bluegrass night at the Earle to a $35 preferred seat for the Embers, the most expensive ticket of the season. In between, the family shows stay at $15 to $25.

A few details on the individual shows:

The Nutcracker is a 70-minute version told with narration. Professional dancers from New York Ballet for Young Audiences perform alongside students from the Surry Arts Council dance program. At 70 minutes, a 3 p.m. Sunday start leaves plenty of time for an early dinner afterward.

The Grinch is the only show of the season with two performances, Saturday and Sunday of the same weekend. Each day has its own Eventbrite ticket link, so make sure you buy for the right day.

Madeline's Christmas is listed for Saturday, December 19, 2026 on the Live Theatre page. The Surry Arts Council's general tickets page lists the same show as December 19, 2027, so check the date on your ticket before you buy.

The Elkin Big Band and the Embers are both part of the Blue Ridge & Beyond series, but they play the Playhouse rather than the Earle. The Embers show is the season's only weeknight ticketed show, on the Monday before Christmas.

Buying tickets for a 359-seat room

There are only 359 seats in the Playhouse, so how you buy matters more than it would at a bigger venue. The Surry Arts Council's tickets page says Eventbrite is its only online ticket seller. You can also buy by phone at 336-786-7998, or in person at the Arts Center or on the lower level of the Andy Griffith Playhouse.

The same page says sales tax and Eventbrite processing or credit card fees may be added. If you're buying four orchestra seats for the Grinch, $80 at face value will come out to a bit more at checkout online.

Since Eventbrite is the only online seller the council names, a ticket offered anywhere else online isn't coming through the council's stated channels.

What isn't on the calendar yet

The Christmas parade, the downtown tree lighting or holiday open house, and the Veterans Day parade don't have 2026 dates posted yet. As of mid-October, Downtown Mount Airy's annual events page still shows its Veterans Day Parade as November 11, 2025. The 2025 Christmas parade ran on Saturday, November 22, at 5 p.m., leaving from Veterans Park and heading down W. Lebanon Street to N. Main, according to Visit Mayberry's parade page.

If the 2026 parade keeps that Saturday 5 p.m. slot, it would fit right after a 3 p.m. matinee. That's a guess based on last year's timing, not a schedule, so wait for the official date before planning around it. Downtown Mount Airy's events page lists a New Year's Eve event for December 31, 2026, with no time or location yet.

The one thing on the schedule that's always free

The Surry Arts Council's old-time music page describes a free jam every Thursday at the Earle. Anyone can join in. The page doesn't list start or end times, so call the council at 336-786-7998 before you go.

On a calendar built around ticketed weekend matinees, the Thursday jam is the one weeknight option that costs nothing. It's an easy choice for out-of-town guests who arrive midweek before a weekend show.

If seeing family at the Grinch or the Nutcracker has you thinking about moving within Mount Airy after the holidays, Pilot Group Real Estate can give you a clear starting number. Request your free home valuation before the parade date is announced, and you'll have it in hand when the new year starts.
